Venture Horizon Media Storage Tower-Tall Single

I bought this media tower from Stacks and Stacks, for about 140 shipped. Definitely one of the more affordable designs to hold a fairly large media collection.

The look of the product is great, as long as you fill it full of DVDs. Leaving this tower empty will expose the cheap-looking backing to any guests. I have read from other reviews on other sites that the shelves bowed under the weight of DVDs, but during assembly, I noticed an optional step to prevent bowing, and it works fine. The shelves are very thin, but for holding up DVDs, I've had no problems so far. Overall the tower is not as sturdy as I'd hoped, but for the purpose of holding DVDs, it's fine. The tower takes up very little room and hugs the wall; it is very compact and to the point.

One small problem though is the side edging strips: they overhang and block the very last DVD on each side, I might just end up putting empty cases on each end to make sure I don't "lose" any of my DVDs.

So, to sum it up:

Pros:

-Fairly affordable for the storage capacity

-Sleek, tall, wall-hugging design takes up very little excess space

-Comes with straps to attach to wall (If you're in an "earthquake zone" as the instructions suggest)

-The black model looks nice, fits almost any decor (not sure how the oak or other finishes would look)

Cons:

-Overall not as sturdy as many would like, though this is not much of a problem if the instructions are followed and shelves are "locked in"

-Side overhangs block off about an inch of shelf space

I bought this unit because it fit the space I had perfectly and held my entire collection. Unfortunately when I assembled the unit and set it up the shelves could not hold the weight if the CDs and noticeably sag, even with two clips holding the shelves from the back. The construction is mostly a vinyl picture over low quality particle board (lots of furniture is constructed of particle board but I have never run across a unit where the pieces bend so easily before assembly, about the lowest quality I've seen) To add insult to injury the holes drilled in the unit for the for placing shelves don't match all the way up the unit and the top shelf isn't level. The top and bottom board seem to be real veneer and are thick enough to hold their shape and are about the only parts that appear to be of reasonably quality. The rest of the kit is junk. They must have photographed the tower laying down on it is back because this shelves can't even hold their own weight.

This product was a little difficult to put together, but it looks nice and doesn't take up a lot of room. The major flaw is that the shelves are two thin and do not support the DVDs very well. I do not suggest putting box sets on the shelves because they make them bend.

I have lots of DVD, CD & some VHS tapes. I needed a tall storage unit (space efficient). I ordered a cherry one. Got the shipment is about one week. Here what I found in the package for what I paid $170. The bottom, top & sides are 1/2 inch MDF all the rest of the items are wood pulp ( really cheap). I was really surprized when I found the shelves, they are 1/4 inch wood pulp boards. Really flimsy. When I loaded them with DVDs they bowed heavily. Really disappointed. It took me about an hour to put it together. I am really handy so it was not much of a challenge, but if you are not handy you mileage may vary. Be careful when you put the paper thin backboard on to the center back support. Make sure the right sides installed as marked (Blue & Red). If you messed this up then the supporting holes for the shelves will not align and the shelves will be not be levelled. I have to set a level before I screwed them in. Be careful the supporting board is made of wood pulp so once you screwed the screws you are done. It really sucks. Overall , it is an extremely cheap product and it even does not do what it is designed for, i.e. support the DVD on its shelves. I searched the web and look for solid wood items, for about $100.00 more you should be able to find a much better product. It is not recommended.

The product is, as it was described. However, the quality of the product falls far short of my expectations. I was trying to match my 2 existing IKEA shelves as my DVD collection has grown and I needed a 3rd shelf. IKEA no longer carries the model I wanted so I had to look elsewhere--thus this purchase. It will suffice, but the value is about 1/3 of the actual price I paid. To make it more of an insult, they claim the list price was $242 and were selling it for $169. My IKEA shelves were $89 each--same size but considerably better quality. I will be keeping the shelf, because it does hold my excess DVD's. If I were to have seen it in person, I would not have bought it. It did assemble very easily, as had been described and it was well packaged--thus my "2" rating. The quality was the difference between a "2" and a "5".

Do yourself a favor--visit an IKEA store or search them out online.
