Montego 4 shelf Bookcase

I bought this piece directly from Home Decorators website a couple of weeks ago. It was delivered on time and well packaged, but there the positives ended.

This bookcase was made in Thailand, and the quality is just atrocious. The pre-drilled holes rarely lined up, the finish was one of the worst I've seen (I will have to take it out to the garage, sand it down good and paint it), but to make matters even worse, one of the side pieces was cracked and glued back together...I found that out while trying to get the wooden plugs in to cover the screws.

So for $79, I got a bookcase that is going to need all kinds of work and is going to look awful until I can get to it. Frankly, I'm not sure if it's even worth the effort. Honestly, a similar bookcase that I bought for $50 bucks from Big Lots several years ago was a much better piece.

Considering what I got from Home Decorators, I won't be shopping there again.

(I see now why this product is rated so highly on the Home Decorator's website. I left a very negative review for it in early February, and it was never posted. After the company contacted me by phone, they offered a substantial credit for this item. I appreciated that, however, I ended up contacting them AGAIN a few weeks later because the credit was never made. Nearly 8 weeks after my initial complaint, the credit was finally made.)

I wanted an open back bookcase for a laptop ( hooked to external monitor and keyboard on desk) a fax maxhine and a scanner. A few decorative items added of course. This is perfect for my needs.

I assumed the fit and finish would be similar to the Winsome Wood (all wood ) products. It is there are a couple of rough spots where additional planing is needed. Not a big deal to me and much preferred over the pressboard, laminate, cardboard products with perfect finishes. Just my preference. If i had paid twice the price I would have expected a near-perfect finish.

Assembly was very easy. The side panels are pre-assembled. The holes are adequately and properly drilled. I've read many reviews complaining of misaligned holes on numerous products. The secret if you are attaching a shelf with 2 holes on one side, start both screws and alternate turning the screws until they're in. If you screw one in all the way the other hole may be misaligned as the holes allow enough leeway to move the shelf from side-to-side a millimeter or two.

The espresso finish looks nice but that's just a personal preference.

I bought 2 of these bookcases. The first was rather hard to assemble, but the 2nd one went faster because of experience. Paint quality varied on different pieces. Happily, they look great, and seem quite sturdy.

I ordered one of these bookshelves to "try it out". I had been looking at a very similar bookshelf in the Ballard Designs" catalogue, and then the exact same one in the "Home Decorators" catalogue. This one was not only a LOT cheaper, but I got free shipping, which saved me $30 over Home Decorators catalogue. It went together with no worry, the wood was not scratched or marred in any way because they packed it really well. I ended up ordering another tall, and two short bookcases of the same type, and I feel like I got a real bargain. The 4 of them are tucked into a little weird nook that I had in the TV room, and they are holding many books and knick-knacks that were sitting in boxes because I had no space for them. These are sturdy enough for my purposes, and they look lovely against a cream painted wall with dark wood floors. I almost never write reviews on the products I buy from Amazon, but I wanted to let other people know that, for the cheap price, these bookcases are anything but cheap. They are great
