ClosetMaid 9-Cube Organizer

ClosetMaid 8644 9-Cube Organizer, WhiteAfter hauling several boxes of books around the country during my post-college nomadic phase, I finally decided to unpack them. I had some space for a bookcase, but not the money for anything fancy. I found this unit at my local SuperTarget and decided to give it a try. I give it 5 stars for the following reasons:

It looks nice. It's not fancy or beautiful, but it has a clean, quiet look. I chose not to attach the backing material (flimsy, as expected with this type of unit). Up against a white wall, it blends in nicely.

It was quite easy to assemble. I did it myself with a power screwdriver. The whole project took about 35 minutes. The parts in my kit were not labeled, but it's not hard to figure out what goes where.

I love that the shelves are divided into "cubes." The dividers provide lots of support for my heavy old textbooks. Lesser shelves or those without support would certainly sag.

The units are compatible with others in the Cubicals line. They can be stacked/arranged to form whatever kind of system you want. I'm considering getting another piece to stack on top. The assembly materials include extra dowels for this purpose. Also, you can get drawer/baskets to slide into the cubes, or doors to turn them into cabinets.

In addition to the extra dowels for stacking more units on top, the hardware packet includes a wall anchor, to keep the unit from tipping/falling on top of kids who climb up the front like a ladder.

All in all, a very functional solution to my book problem.

I felt I needed to add a review of my own to counter the bad ones.

I've had this organizer for about three years. True, it's not the sturdiest thing, but I don't go around pushing on my furniture all the time and I don't have kids. It was super easy to put together and comes apart just as easily (I had to disassemble it, pack it up and move to a different state with it). I, unlike other posters, did not have any pre-drilled holes missing.

I got some of those fabric pull out drawers for it and those have been great and give the furniture some color. I have clothes, random knick-knacks and giant textbooks in mine and it's been holding up superbly. None of the parts have broken on me and nothing has ripped off. I definitely recommend this.

A disappointing item, with confusing assembly instructions and parts that do not fit together well. The nine-cube variant of the Closetmaid organizer shelving should be easier to assemble than other items in this product line, given that the wooden parts are standardized and the entire shelf is symmetrical. But clever engineering means that Closetmaid saves a few cents per unit by making the metal hardware more complex, and they pass this savings on to the buyer by making the shelf harder to put together. I would recommend that you examine competing items carefully, as there are higher quality items easily found at a lower price point.

i ordered 3 plus 21 fabric drawers for my son's playroom. I must admit that i was very disappointed in the quality of the organizer. For starters, the directions refer to pre-drilled holes that do not exist. The laminate chips ridiculously easy exposing the lovely fiberboard underneath. You can see the screws and the wooden dowel holes from the top of the organizer. While i was assembling the third one, it fell apart and the wooden dowels broke and the pieces chipped. I had to get really creative to assemble it after the dowels were broken in half and i couldn't pull the shredded parts out of the holes.

All in all this product is just ok. I feel like i've seen a cheaper equivalent at Target and Ikea. The saving grace for this organizer are the fabric drawers. Once assembled with the fabric drawers installed, it looks good. It serves it's purpose, to organize toys in a child's room. I wouldn't buy this to use as a display shelf or to put anywhere where people might see it and be able to scrutinize the quality of the product. It looks cheap.

I don't write many reviews but I was delighted by this shelf and it well exceeded my expectations.

You won't get it together in "only minutes" (alone, took just under an hour) but the final product is really nice and elegant for the price. Higher quality than expected, just don't expect the moon. It's sturdy. The fabric totes are cheap and cute and an easy way to express your style or personalize your shelf. The totes themselves are somewhat stiff fabric and also studier than expected.

Some reviews said screws in the finished product are left exposed but I think that has been corrected as my unit came with screw covers. I think the whole thing finishes quite nicely. A little tap of the hammer gets the cover even with the wood. Also there were no holes left exposed from optional dollies, there were matching dolly-hole stoppers included. I had no issues with drill holes absent, all of mine were present.

My very basic little electric screwdriver did the job just fine, but it says you can use a regular screwdriver if you don't have a drill.

I absolutely recommend this product to someone looking for storage or organization on a budget, I found the lowest price at my Target store, and the bins were cheap too.
