Five Shelf Metal Bookcase

Five Shelf Metal BookcaseI just received and assembled this bookcase and am very pleased. What I wanted in a bookcase was something that was tall enough and sturdy enough to hold a lot of books, not look too bad, and importantly not be so heavy that it was a pain to move. This bookcase nicely fills the bill. It has five big shelves, all steel construction, yet it weighs only 31 pounds.

The steel shelves snap onto steel tubes that are bolted securely to the side rails by long heavy bolts. While there are no diagonal cross members, the bookshelf when assembled is quite sturdy because there are a total of 15 horizontal members. The steel shelves are made of heavy gauge steel perforated by a lot of small holes and feel quite sturdy. All pieces were 100% painted. I had no problem assembling it. It is made in Taiwan.

Comparable wooden bookcases are all much heavier. A problem I found with the less expensive wooden bookcases was that the weight handling ability of the shelves was suspect. These bookcases often use flimsy plastic brackets that poke into small holes in the side wood to hold up the shelves.

I wasn't expecting this to be as good as it is, especially considering the low price (found cheaper on another site), however it has exceeded my expectations. I feared that it would be light and rickety, when in fact it's surprisingly sturdy and solid. It's also easy to put together, and holds a good number of books with no need for bookends. It also has a nice clean contemporary look to it and has a fairly low footprint to save on space. I bought a few more because I was so impressed, and considering you can get pretty poorly made fiberboard and paperfilled plywood shelving for a similar price, this metal bookcase seems like a no brainer when it comes to style and value!

I bought two of these based on these reviews. They are flimsy at best. The shelves wobble both empty and with books on them. They seem very overpriced...something you might pick up a yard sale used for $20.

I agree with Donald Fulton's 2005 review completely and wanted to up the overall rating of this bookcase. A senior woman, I assembled the entire thing in an hour (key provided for thirty included screws for crosspieces, miniscrewer needed for only two Philips-head included screws). I can move the bookcase easily when it is assembled, yet it is sturdy enough to hold my tax and legal volumes which weigh a ton. It was well packaged by the manufacturer, contained no scratches, and the tiny airholes in the shelves will permit some air circulation. The shelves are tall enough to hold magazines, and the end pieces are great since the books don't fall off the shelf. This is perfect for a basement where humidity would destroy wood and MDF, and I wish they made a wider model for us book crazies. It would also be great for a pantry or a garage. If this seems to fit your needs, give it a try. It is easy to assemble, sturdy, convenient.
