Alera Wire Shelving Garment Rack (Black)

Alera Wire Shelving Garment RackA loud thud on the front porch followed by a quick ring of the doorbell could only mean the UPS man has left us another treasure. It was just like dragging dead body in the house. This was a good sign. Being heavy meant I was halfway to discovering my our garment rack was indeed heavy duty... and not even out of the box yet. "Tell you mother to hold off on dinner and clear the living room kids, we're putting this thing together, now". One of the triplets whipped out his razor knife and had that box open it 30 seconds flat. Seizing the opportunity as another life lesson to the boys, first order of business was to toss away the assembly instructions. 1.because "we're men, and nobody tells us how stuff goes together." And b. even though there were no written words on the instruction, I suspect the drawings were done in Chinese anyway. `Sides, me and the boys slapped that sucker together in 19 minutes flat. I stood back to admire our work and thought "This is one quality unit". The duty part of the heavy-duty was next proven as the boys immediately employed the rolling shelf as an indoor trolley car. They run that thing all through the house, taking turns pushing. The hanging bar made for a prefect passenger handhold as the boys stepped on an off in the dining room. They loaded the shelves with books, pillows and the cat. Nearly knocked over Mom during a kitchen stop where they hung as many pots and pans on the hooks they could get a hold of.

Five stars all the way, baby!! This thing is the best Amazon deal ever. Incredibly, I find it selling for more than twice what I paid. My second one is on the way. I can't wait for the next thud.

This thing is bigger than I thought. It is also VERY heavy duty for the price. I still have no idea how these guys can sell this item so cheaply and then on top of that to ship it for only 8 bucks. I received mine in 3 days and it was easy to setup. This is a must buy for anyone needing a high quality organization rack. The large industrial castor wheels roll over my rugs with no problem. I use mine in a restricted laundry space and it has helped me streamline. Get this bad boy!

I looked all over for a garment rack for my entrance. It was very easy to assemble, and I have heavy coats on it with no problems. Loved it so much I bought another one for my basement.

I will admit it: I was terrified. My sister had a very nice (but also very expensive) closet of shelves, racks and cabinets installed earlier this year and I was worried that my closet would never be as nice as hers.

When my contractor-installed wire shelving that had been anchored to the wall folded and crashed for the second time, I knew something else had to be done.

These racks were our solution after months of reading reviews, testing and shopping around.

I couldn't be more pleased.

I wear long dresses and love to sew...which is why the contractor blamed me for the previous closet shelving crumpling. Well in this day and age, what is an avid sewer to do? Fold the dresses and store them in containers?

So, the reasons this shelving is better:

-It's not too wide/long along the wall. It shouldn't bow in the middle, because it's got FOUR strong poles holding it up.

-The wheels. These babies can be rolled anywhere and they're super-sturdy!

-Much easier to clean under and behind.

-The added bonus of the hooks that go along one side. These are AMAZING for purses, book bags, scarves, belts, ect.

-The three shelves. They're adjustable so we put the middle ones lower on the racks for my dresses, which allowed for sturdy shoe storage on the bottom shelf!

-The TOP shelf! I can store my empty luggage up there and have it within an arm's reach (not under stuff) when I need to pack quickly for travel!

-The top shelf stores my checked bag and three carry-ons!

-The garment rods are removable, then you'd have a very nice rack that rolls around and can store ANYTHING.

Best of all? We didn't have to put holes in the walls of my closet! One doesn't have to totally commit a closet area to be a closet for the rest of time with one of these units!

This would be perfect for lofts, offices or any space that may or may not always need a closet-type area!

I knew there had to be a well-designed garment storage/closet solution. Try this one, keep your sanity.

I bought this garment rack based on the reviews and I was so happy with it that I wanted to write a review myself.

I bought a cheaper garment rack at Bed Bath and Beyond a few weeks ago. It was a piece of junk. Several of the pieces didn't line up correctly during the assembly and as soon as I hung one coat on it, it started leaning. I was so annoyed that I wrote a scathing review of it on the BBB site. I didn't want anyone else to fall for it like I did. I searched on several sites for a better quality garment rack and somehow found this one on Amazon. It was twice the price but it looked like exactly what I needed and all of the reviews were positive.

As soon as it got delivered today I set out to assemble it and get rid of the BBB rack. Can I tell you how refreshing it is to assemble a solid piece of furniture and have everything line up and click into place like its supposed to? I had no issues with the assembly and the final product is solid, stable and perfect for the space I needed it. It is a tall piece, but I have 12-ft. ceilings in my loft so that was not an issue for me.

I wish every thing I've ever had to assemble at home went as smoothly as this piece. Don't waste time with cheaper priced garment racks. Just order this one from the start and save yourself lots of frustration.

John Louis Home Premier 12-Inch Deep Closet Shelving System

John Louis Home JLH-529 Premier 12-Inch Deep Closet Shelving System, Red MahoganyOur closet came with a single shelf and a single rod hanging beneath it. That was all I needed for many years, but now I'm married and have a child. Our storage needs have gone way up and the old configuration proved to be inefficient and inadequate. Thus it was that we discovered the John Louis Premier Solid Wood Closet System. It seemed like something that would work. We installed it in "Configuration C" and it works splendidly.

A note of caution is in order. Before you attempt to install this closet system, you'd better do an honest evaluation of your skills. Are you very handy around the home, or are you just barely able to get things put together? If the answer is the latter, don't attempt this project. It's very difficult. The instructions are opaque, to say the least. This project will favor those who are able to improvise when things don't go well. Things won't. If you are unable to do anything except following instructions, don't attempt this project. I ended up with far more parts than I would ever have needed, and not enough parts to get the job done.

After the very difficult task of getting the whole thing assembled inside the closet, I found that there were only two "G Shelves," although the drawings I was following clearly indicated three were necessary. Hmmmm. There were enough parts for the installation of three shelves, but there were, in fact, only two shelves included in the package and, clearly, no room for three. I called a 1-800 number and explained the situation. First, the telephone experience was exceptionally good. I got a person on the first ring and the lady was both understanding and helpful. She said an additional shelf would be shipped immediately. Evidently this is an ongoing problem that they are familiar with. But, why would they sell a product that indicated the need for three shelves but supply only two?

Another thing I noted was that a little tube of finish repair was included in the package. Expect to use the repair kit. The wood finish on this closet is very easy to damage and the repair kit will come in handy.

Well, all in all, my experience with this closet system is very mixed. I love the way it looks and works. I hope it lasts over an extended period as the wood seems very easy to damage. I gave it four stars, but perhaps three and a half might be closer.

Gary Peterson

Note of 1-13-13: The closet has now been in for a little over 3 1/2 years. We couldn't be any more satisfied. We installed it in a bedroom, but the room is now used for an office, sewing and general-purpose room. The closet system is so attractive that we took the folding doors off the closet and now use the shelving system as a display for my wife's doll collection and doll clothes, among other things. The wood and finish is fragile, as noted by many people, but our usage presents no stress and it has held up well. I'd get another of these systems for our other small bedroom closet (the young boy's room) but I've already built in my own shelving and it's just not worth all the work to change it.

It's hard to trash this product or speak it up. The John Louis closet organizer systems represent a middle tier of closet organizers that has no competition. That is, if you want a solid wood closet organizer that costs significantly less than $1000 and you don't have to completely build from scratch, this is the only way to go. However, The method of construction is the same as the Ikea junk that falls apart as you install. First, the package includes a ton of drywall anchors that are meant to be self-drilling. They don't work; they're junk. They simply melt before they get into the wall. If you're lucky, you'll get one halfway in, the head will break off and the extremely hot melted tip will fall down into your wall. If you're really lucky, it will land on extremely dry cellulose insulation. The cam bolts that hold some pieces together are the classic Ikea junk. When assembling the main tower, you are required to assemble three pieces together before attaching to the wall. This guarantees that the third piece will pull away, tearing the cam bolts out of both pieces and leaving you with either useless junk or a new fix-it-yourself engineering issue. For $400, more than a few expletives flew from my mouth during the installation. I could not finish the installation in one sitting because I needed to go buy additional drywall anchors. I foresaw this issue and had pre-purchased some, but not enough. The look of the product is pretty good. The wood is solid, not medium-density-fiber-board, but it still cracks easily Every piece I installed cracked when I used the recommended 1/2 screw. It is unclear what kind of wood this is, but since the product appears to be manufactured in China, you can bet yourself that this is an unsustainably harvested wood product. The only conselation there, is that I can tell you this is a fast-growing wood; it's soft like a young, highly-productive wood, not hard and tight-grained like a mature wood. Thus, it is possible they are not mowing down older forest to create this product. At first, I would have thought it was something unsubstantial like eukalyptus, but the entire package is very heavy. I bet they don't care what wood or where it's from, so it may vary from batch to batch. The finish is easily scratched during installation, but the packaging includes a small vial of colored powder. I couldn't tell if it was meant to be powder or if it dried out in the warehouse. Overall, this product is probably worth $100, well overpriced at $300 to $400, and has no competition in the $250 to $800 price range, so you can rest assured the price is set arbitrarily. If you do choose this product, make sure to have a second (maybe third) set of hands for installation of the main tower, and supply your own fasteners.

A normal reach-in closet is about 2 feet deep. Mine is 23.5 inches deep. It is difficult to guess whether to install the 12" or 16" deep organizer. I chose the 12" deep model, and I think there is room to have gone 16" deep. The deeper one gives you the option of drawers, which might be nice if your closet doors accomodate.

Anyway, I think I would prefer this over the MDF junk, but I am am still underwhelmed by the materials quality. If I were a real stickler, I would ask for the entire unit to be replaced by John Louis Home because almost every piece broke in one way or another during installation. With additional equipment, I have made it work, but I have yet to decide what I will request from the company for retribution.

Hope this was helpful. Though, it may not have been because this is neither a recommendation for, nor against the product.

More than a year later, the whole unit is holding up very well and all issues during installation are inconsequential at this point. It turns out to be a good closet organizer. I do not feel bad at all about the relative cost given it's ongoing performance.

If you know how to use screwdrivers, drills, hand saw, and a level, you can put this together. It took a little time to read the instructions over and over, but really there a just a few critical measurments, the rest is somewhat forgiving. Just don't go cutting all you wood up all at once. Cut as you need to and double check the measurments. Took about 4 hours to properly install, first timer. Thinking about doing another! I would buy this product or one similar again.

We read the reviews and this seemed like a good option. After several hours of installation it does look nice but I'm not sure it was worth it. It is certainly better than the particle board or wire closet systems. This is not a beginner project unless you have extreme patience. Not only is there no room for error with some of the measurements and leveling there is cutting involved. When we finely finished I felt like I could have spent the same amount of time and less money to design and build my own closet system that would have been better suited to our needs.

Bought two of the Premier Red Mahogany 12" sets for our walk-in closet. The wood as others have mentioned is light and gets scratched easily -however I didn't see that as a disadvantage with the weight -easier to install on your own also wood didn't split. The main thing is to make sure you have the right tools-I used two drills one impact drill with a phillips head bit to screw in screws (think the impact drill feature helped considerably to drive the wall anchors into the drywall and the screws into the studs)-the other I had a 1/8" drillbit to predrill (predrilled everything except forthe small screws).Had a couple of levels and a miter saw to cut the shelves to size.

Before you start read the instructions ahead of time and follow them closely. Also make sure if you select one of the 10" configurations that you have enough shelving (I had a 8" closet so I didn't need all the shelving but you may need additional shelving and additional curved wooden supportsthe package comes with six but some of the configurations show using eight).

The u-clamps that go on the wall to support the shelves do not have any play so if you've got walls that have imperfections (as I did)the shelves will not slide into the clamps-you will need take a pliers and open up the clamps or shim the clams.

Another key consideration is the height of the top shelf when installing the two shelves one above the next -you are expected to position the upper shelf at 84"if I had to do the installation again I would have tried to install this perhaps at 72" or at least where my wife (5'1") can reach it. At least for her clothes she doesn't need the same kind of room as mine(the 84" is just right for me -actually the suits and shirts reach the top of the bottom shelf reducing the effectiveness of the bottom shelf for storage.

The wood scratches when pushing the shelves into the clamps -but they are mostly hidden-of the two touch-up bottles one was completely dry (not a big deal to me because I had other stuff to use for the touch up). Also be careful with the application of the supplied touch-up-it eats up the existing finish if you accidentally brush on sections that are not clear wood.

Also assume it will take you at least a full day for each closet set installationmore if you are not quite handy and familiar with tools.

The end result is excellent -closet looks like a million bucks (ok perhaps 250K since I did not add doors or use the 16" which allows you to add drawers but I didn't need any). Am planning to get more sets for other closets in the house. Also now that I have installed the two

Polder 90-05 Double Bathroom Shelf and Towel Rack, Chrome

Polder 90-05 Double Bathroom Shelf and Towel Rack, ChromeI bought this years ago, and it's been in three different bathrooms of mine. I couldn't leave it behind when I moved it's fabulous. It holds so many things, I can't imagine living without it. (It does need to be mounted into studs or something, so when you take it down, there will be big holes.)

I bought this after debating over several different hotel-style shelves. I'm definitely happy that I chose this one! The shelves are the perfect size for towels. They even fit full-size bath sheets!!

This product comes un-assembled. It only took me 5 minutes to get it together. Super easy!

Tips: Make sure you put the hanging racks in place BEFORE you finish screwing it together.. and start by just finger-tightening the screws. Once you have everything together, then you can go around and finish tightening them down. I didn't do this, and it ended up kind of lopsided. After I loosened a few, and got it all straightened up, it was perfect! (The screw-holes were even placed the exact width of my wall studs haha)

Definitely worth the money! I get compliments on it all the time. My mother-in-law even wants it!!

item is great looking, but definitely not good for a bathroom! bathroom has lots of moisture which comes from the shower after showering. after 3 months of having this item, it started to rust, which started to run down on my white walls int he bathroom and my walls were stained. Would be a good item for a pantry or laundry room to hold items on such as detergent and canned goods but not in a bathroom for towels etc.

We bought this to mount above our toilet since we didn't want a clunky wooden cabinet (they all looked so old and boring). It was easy to assemble (make sure to add the towel racks before tightening it all together) and mount to the wall. The shelves are a bit on the shallow side, but not too bad. The only downside to this unit is that I've noticed a small amount of rust on the underside of the shelves due to the amount of moisture in the bathroom.

Otherwise this guy looks AWESOME and you can't beat the price!

UPDATE:

Had to knock this down from 4 to 2 stars. The amount of rust that has accumulated on this thing since I bought it is CRAZY! For a bathroom shelf, they didn't really think this one through.

Honey-Can-Do 4-Tier Closet Accessory Shelf

Honey-Can-Do SHO-01172 4-Tier Closet Accessory Shelf, WhiteLove this product! I live in an efficienty apartment and need all the extra compact storage I can get. This rack is sturdy, holds my shoes without bending and fits well in my closet. I can fit three pair of mens shoes (size 8.5) on each shelf so this holds 12 pair of shoes and sandals. Highly recommended.

I fixed it up in less than 5mins. It is light but (sufficiently) sturdy for shoes and papers. Takes up minimal space and is a great storage unit. Am considering to get a second one.

Buy Honey-Can-Do 4-Tier Closet Accessory Shelf Now

I'm probably being overly sensitive, but "Honey-Can-Do" strikes me as a gender-specific, slightly patronizing imperative. Then I read the assembly instructions, which begin with the sentence: "Plan to allow 5 minutes for assembly." What's that supposed to mean? That honey's problem is impatience? (As any proud patriarchal head-of-household can see, these separate 12 pieces are likely to test such an assumption severely.) Or that honey is most likely afflicted by the usual male incompetence? (If I plan to allow 5 minutes and publicly confess that it took me 15, I'm a double dork--for botching the job and admitting it).

So the rack is an insult--but admittedly a light one. It truly is practically a no-brainer to assemble, though you'd have to be a polymath to nail it in 5 minutes--either that or someone who reads through the instructions in advance and practices doing it a couple of times before starting the timer. I elected to do neither, so 15 minutes will have to stand as a blemish on an otherwise successful implementation of the shelf.

All the same, this is the rack I've been looking for and not finding. It costs less than those slanted jobs that work only with high-heeled shoes, and unlike some of the lightweight plastic racks I've tried, it doesn't resemble a hammock once I've loaded it up. Moreover, this generous-sized concoction could conceivably accommodate up to 16 pairs of shoes! (Caveat: That's if your feet are less than size 10 and you have some sandals or sneakers that'll slide underneath the bottom shelf; for most of us, 9 pairs of shoes is probably more accurate.) You'll probably find it a little on the high side to clear the shirts in your closet, but if you remember to put your dress shoes on the top rack, they should remain relatively dust-free.

Unlike some racks, this one doesn't collapse or adjust to the width of your closet, so measure carefully or plan to spend a lot more than 5 minutes knocking out a wall to remodel the closet (honey no can do).

This shelf was so easy to assemble when I saw the tiny box I got scared that it would be a hundred pieces to figure out, but it was actually a 2 minute process! The shelf is a little bigger then I was hoping for, but I can take a rack off the bottom to lower the height a little. Over all a great sturdy product!

I'm sorry but this is the worst product I have ever purchased. It wasn't too tricky to put it together but after you do it won't stand up straight. It leans to either side drastically and I consider it totally useless. I have not had the time to re-package and send it back but I will probably throw it in the trash. Totally useless to me.

Rubbermaid 4B07 Triple Cube Shelf Kit

Rubbermaid 4B07 Triple Cube Shelf Kitit came in faster than promised-its a plus)

good quality, hard wood, quite bigger than I expected, but the dimensions are on the website-my fault )

cons: sharp edges and heavy (really heavy-I would not use the included hardware to hang it in my kid`s room into the drywall-went to home depot for something more serious instead) the most important part-color is off-the only reason I got these was the light birch color to coordinate my kid`s furniture-its actually much darker-bamboo style -exactly like target`s box shelves that I did not buy just because of the color(

I bought this for my bathroom, I recently move to a new apartment, we decided to use the master bedroom as a family room, and use the second bedroom with a more "simple" bathroom besides, this shelf turns a boring bathroom into a modern one, we put it in an asimetrical position, it's not only cute but also practical for the toiletry

John Louis Home JLH-522 Standard 12-Inch Depth Closet Shelving System, Honey Maple

John Louis Home JLH-522 Standard 12-Inch Depth Closet Shelving System, Honey MapleFirst, the 16" model is available at Target for $479.99 (but we did have to pay a 5% sales tax)

The instructions are reasonably straight forward but should be read very carefully and:

(1) Make sure that you do not block any electrical outlets with the shelving by planning ahead and

(2) If you can find studs do so, plastic anchors they supply are OK, but the whole system is cantilevered (that is no support on the floor) so you have to be in solid to the wall, especially at the one bracket end.

(3) Finally when installing the tower brackets do make sure that they are the right distance apart AND in proper alignment to the top brackets that were the first step in installation, otherwise you might have the top shelf resting on only PART of the tower (it will work but not look "finished."

Also, you will need a 10 foot ceiling to hang two clothes racks in the same bay, on an eight foot ceiling you will be out of luck there is just not enough vertical space to do it.

It was easier than wire shelving. The supplied hollow wall anchors are so-so. Using a cordless drill, hammer, and miter saw speed things up. If you are lucky enough to have straight walls, you shouldn't need the hammer. If you don't want arms like Popeye, get a drill (all fasteners are screws). This system also gives you a perfect excuse to go buy a laser level. Once the tools are collected and the plan is FINALLY agreed upon, the closet can be installed and used in under a day.

Buy John Louis Home JLH-522 Standard 12-Inch Depth Closet Shelving System, Honey Maple Now

We bought one kit for a 7' reach-in closet and had to modify it a bit because the instruction book gives suggestions for 10' and 8' layouts. I'd recommend a circular saw for cutting shelves and rods if your closet is not exactly 8' or 10'. Also not on the "required tools" list were a stud-finder and a drill. We found drilling pilot holes to be appropriate in some cases, and the large numbers of screws made using our drill a must. The wood is soft and frayed slightly when cut. Because of that, and a few nicks during installation, the included touch-up stain came in handy. Also useful was a transparent grid which allowed us to play around with different layouts before we ever began. Installation took two handy people about 6 hours, partly because of the limited space in the closet. I'd recommend removing the closet doors if you're not installing in a walk-in. I'd also HIGHLY recommend reading the instructions all the way through before beginning, laying out all the materials and labeling the bags of screws by length, and taking your time. This is not a job that can be rushed. When complete the closet looked great and the system is very sturdy.

When you open the packaging you will know you made the right call. Each piece meticulously wrapped so the wood doesn't get marred in transit, they give you plenty of good screws and good anchors (not those junky ones that come with most kits), it comes with a stain touch up marker for if you custom cut one of the shelves, the instruction book cames with many layouts and a clear sheet to transfer and alter for custom fits so that anyone with the tiniest bit of patience can install and that someone handy can install quickly without making a silly mistake on cutting.

How hard is it to install?

Two chicks with a drill and a saw installed a perfect closet in one day without a problem. This was with making it exactly how we wanted it and an hour of obsessing over whether we wanted the long hanging items on the left or the right. This is an easy as it could possibly be made.

It is also very forgiving to small errors (or crooked walls) because of the way the long pieces cover.

Any tricks?

one trick to mention: there are two sets of small screws that look almost identical they aren't. Each type comes in their own baggie, so really this is just for the people who do like I do, say "we need the 3/4 screws for this" and don't check to see if there are two types of 3.4 inch screws. I accidently used some of the ones with the larger heads to early because of that mistake and the small heads don't work for the later install items. It is a bone head mistake, just trying to help anyone else avoid. Manufacture can't prevent boneheads, but they do provide enough screws that it is okay to make quite a few mistakes of this nature.

My husband and I are delighted with this solid wood closet organizing systerm. It's classy and beautiful--unlike the tacky particle board, plastic or wire systems in most stores. There's room for everything and more than one unit can be put together to fit any closet. Plus, shelves and towers can be purchased to fill any gaps. Would recommend this to anybody!
