Way Basics Eco Modular 3-Shelf Tribeca Bookcase and Storage

This shelving unit is made out of layered paper, similar to cardboard (but obviously way stronger). I wrote this rather lengthy review to give people an idea of what to expect, as well as to dismiss some of the "myths" from some other reviews.

Pros:

Very strong. This unit holds a full row of college textbooks and does not bow, as long as you keep the inserts in the middle. If you take out those inserts, you will notice some slight bowing. I have had my unit with the inserts in for a little over a year now and the panels have not bowed or deteriorated under stress in any way. So you can be pretty sure that these panels are quite strong. Stronger than particle board? Well, the only way you could probably find out is to take a sledgehammer to it. But the panels that are used on this thing are twice as thick as conventional particle board shelving, and I have other shelves where the particle board panels have bowed under similar weights. So this unit is actually a lot stronger than most conventional wood units.

Relatively easy to put together. Yes, if you are not careful, you can screw it up. But you do get a couple of tries if you are careful when taking them apart after making a mistake. I don't see a lot of complaints about people messing up the assembly though; in fact, quite the contrary. I am a fairly precise person, so it was no sweat for me.

Light weight. The description says that it's about 60% the weight of particle board. It feels even less than that. One of the reasons why I bought this was because I am not very strong, and I knew that I might have to carry this thing fully assembled up and down multiple flights of stairs when I bought a new home. I just moved into my new house last month and it was such a breeze because the thing is so light. I can lift the entire unit with one arm and not break a sweat.

Cons:

Surface damage. In particular, the corners are most susceptible to damage. This should be pretty obvious to most people since it is made of paper, but since the surface layer does not wrap around the corners it is possible for them to be scuffed up when hit. This should not be a problem with most people, and wasn't a problem for me either until the moving company people hauled it up the stairs and banged it up a little. Also, if someone is not careful with the vacuum cleaner, they could hit it and scratch it a little. On the other hand, I should say that it is easy to touch up so that you would not notice it. If the outer layer gets messed up a little and the inner white paper is exposed, you can use a dark marker on it (black or espresso colored units). You may not even notice with the white and beige colors. The flat surfaces (not corners) tend to resist damage fairly well. I don't go trying to intentionally scratch the surface, but I have put ceramics on them and they seem pretty durable. All of the flat surfaces on my unit are still pristine.

So basically this is a very light, very strong unit with some minor surface issues that stem from its paper construction. Overall I would recommend this item, as long as your family members are not inclined to abusing your furniture.

Finally, I see some people who claim that this unit collapsed within 24 hours. Honestly, I simply do not see how that is possible UNLESS the person did not put it together properly. If you follow all of the instructions (longer pieces rest on top of shorter pieces, backboard attached to back), I can't imagine how it is possible for this unit to collapse on its own. I have had about 50lbs worth of books on this thing (not counting the bottom shelf) 24 hours a day for over a year, and the thing is still just as sturdy as ever after surviving the moving company hauling it down three flights of stairs and up one. So as to people who are worried about "collapse", I can tell you that this thing is pretty safe. I mea, I guess it's possible that some people received defective units, but these are probably rare cases. Both my units (this one and a smaller one) have survived the move and show no signs of deterioration at all.

It's pretty flimsy, you are literally sticky pasting the pieces together. I use it for DVDs. Initially I had cookbooks on it but the boards were sagging under the weight. If you are looking for something high quality/sturdy this is definitely not for you.

This bookcase sounds good and looks good but in reality it was terrible and didn't last 24 hours the first time around. We followed the easy instructions to the letter but after waiting the proper time to set and actually placed items on it, it collapsed and broke within 24 hours. Amazon replaced it only for it to collapse again within 48 hours spooking my son in the middle of the night.

I have to add my kudos along with the other posters to Way Basics for making a product that is easy to put together AND flexible in design. In this set you are given four horizonal-use boards and nine vertical support boards. Yes, you can quickly put it together the way they suggest, but you can also, say, inset the vertical supports four inches or so in on the top and bottom level and come up with a different look! My one suggestion, though, if you are going to play around with the lay out: set everything out on the floor as if the unit was laying flat on its 'back' (the boards are thick enough to 'stand' on their narrow width) to make sure a)you like the pattern you are planning and b)you have all the pieces for the pattern you are planning. Because once you've pulled back the covering for the adhesive and 'stuck' it, you're pretty much set with where it is. (fortunately not a problem I ran into, although I was working to make two non standard units out of four sets).

I'd also strongly suggest putting it together in the room you are going to use it unless you have the space to leave it where you've built it for 24 hours to set (heavy books on top apparently help this).

All in all a great product, I'd give it a five but there were some dings and slightly warped/crumpled edges (inside a pristine box) which were only noticeable when you're right on top of the piece, which of course you are when you set it up.

Off to order another unit for my son's room. Love this product!

added 11/09: You've GOT to use the backer board or your unit isn't going to be stable. I sent a picture of my 'design' to way basics and they shot me an email back letting me know how very important this is! And you really need to make sure you put weight on the top when you're done and let it 'set overnight' for the glue to 'take'.

This is a piece of junk. No screws to hold it together, only sticky tape! I was shocked at quality being even lower than I expected. It could not be worse quality without being made of cardboard. The box it came in is sturdier than the bookcase. Get yourself a good cardboard box and save the money.

Mission Style 3-Shelf Bookcase

Excellent quality book shelf. Looks great in any room and is easy to assemble. A good quality bookshelf made of real wood could hardly be equaled at this cost.

We recently changed the flooring in our living room and wanted matching furniture accents. We didn't want to spend a lot of money and saw this bookcase online for a very reasonable price. Even though we were willing to sacrifice a little quality for price, we are pleasantly surprised at the rich cherry color that complemented our floors beautifully. This item won't compare to a similar bookcase selling for triple the price or more, but it looks like it costs much more. There were very slight imperfections in the stain, but those were strategically hidden when it was put together. The parts fit together well without any gaps or imbalances. All in all, we're very happy with the purchase and we avoided spending easily triple the price or more for a similar item.

Product is good and as advertised. However, putting it together was a challenge if you follow the instructions, they do not list step by step. It's only a picture and you pretty much have to guess which pieces/screws go where.

I got completements on this book shelf. I was able to put it together myself. It looks great. And because you can see through the sides and back, it does not look intrusive.

Rubbermaid Configurations Sliding Wire Basket

Ordered the deluxe 4-8' closet system and several accessories for both me and my husband's 8' closets. I ordered just one sliding wire basket for myself to see how it was (it was a little pricey). This is a big basket: 23.5" wide and 7.25" high. Because it is 18" deep, it extends past the 12" shelves. I personally had a difficult time installing the basket. It installs the same way as the sliding pants racks, which I really had a hard time installing. Even my husband complained and he's pretty handy. Just read the instructions carefully, and keep a screwdriver within arm's reach once you start inserting the brackets into the uprights. However, once installed, the sliding wire basket is wonderful. It glides in and out and holds a lot of stuff. The whole Rubbermaid Configurations closet system is affordable, attractive, and for the most part simple to install. I highly recommend all of it.

This is a great basket that holds a lot and is extremely sturdy. The glide is as smooth as could be wished for -far nicer than I expected from a do-it-yourself closet-in-a-box system.

I agree with other reviewers that this piece is tricky to install. The rest of the Rubbermaid Configurations family of products is super-easy to install, which makes the complexity and difficulty of installing this one item a bit surprising.

Also surprising (as another reviewer noted) is the price. I purchased 2 full closet kits for 49.99 each (Gold Box special). Paying the same price for one drawer that you pay for the entire closet unit does indeed seem ridiculous.

As a sturdy, well-built drawer, this item shouldn't necessarily be cheap. But the price is too high relative to the overall cost of the closet. $100 for a couple drawers is going to match or exceed the price of just about any closet kit you can buy here on Amazon -that just doesn't add up, so to speak.

One final note: There is another drawer you can get for the Configurations system. It's a soft-sided "canvas sliding basket" that costs far less ($15-20 for the medium or $25-30 for the large). It's far less sturdy and doesn't glide nicely at all. It may do for less regular use, such as a winter storage closet, attic, basement, or other such storage area. But for everyday use (e.g., bedroom or bathroom closet), the wire basket is the way to go. It will stand up to repeated regular use.

The basket itself is great and huge it holds a ton of clothes/socks/whatever. Setup of the basket installing the arms which it mounts with took maybe 3 minutes per basket (I bought 2 of them). They slide/glide in and out perfectly and make the closet look very professional. I ordered this with the 8 foot Rubbermaid Configurations kit. The entire kit cost me $119 yet these baskets were $50 each? I paid $100 for 2 basket accessories yet the entire closet kit itself only cost $119? Something doesn't seem right.

Anyway, these baskets are awesome and the configurations closet system + these baskets make a great replacement for a dresser.

I bought this basket to hold socks, etc. It was very easy to install and very practical.

I am planning to replace several other shelves that were holding sweaters with these baskets.

I ordered these drawers because I was re-organizing my closet and wanted to get the most of my space, while also leaving the option for re-organizing or changing the way the closet is structured in a couple of years or as my space needs evolve. I love that with this type of system (rubbermaid) I can constantly change/add/subtract elements to my closet. I did not go with a set kit, but purchased items at my local hardware store and customized it with online components.

Pros:

-These were free to ship on amazon, were 8 dollars less online than in the store! Score!

-They shipped FAST! I got them a day ahead of schedule.

-THe look sort of small, but I combined my sock/bra/sports bra/underwear/swimsuit drawers all into ONE sliding drawer!

-They just look so nice and uniform when all lined up.

-The sliding mechanism is really nice and smooth.

-They come in modern titanium color...for a price.

-You can fit a lot of drawers in a small space, each takes up 8 inches on your mounting brackets.

Cons:

-Although the packaging was perfect, 1/3 drawers I ordered had some terrible bending in the basket and looked pretty crunched out of the box, I was able to straighten it myself thankfully.

-The screws that hold the brackets to the sliding mechanism are very small and hard to handle, I spent a few minutes just trying to get the position right that would allow tehm to line up and kept dropping the tiny screws repeatedly.

-THere are no directions telling you how far apart to place the hanging wall mounts that you must have to mount these ( mount brackets 24 inches apartI clicked my basket in and then screwed the brackets into my wall to avoid any mistakes)

-There is no top for the top of the highest drawer, you have to buy more brackets and shelving unless you want it open.

-They seem sort of overpriced, but I am really enjoying them so far

Gorilla Rack GR5-3012-5IMP 5-Shelf 30-by-12-by-60-Inch Shelving Unit, Black

I purchased three of these units as the size was correct for my application, and the gorilla rack name. Over the last several years I have put together about 11 gorilla rack systems. I have gotten used the the sturdy nature of the shelving and the ease of assembly. This rack is not like that. The metal uses for the posts and shelf supports is much thinner, 18 gauge I believe. It can be bent with fingers.

The fit and finish is good. When assembled in the 5 shelf configuration, mine have the tendency for the upper and lower posts to slide adjacent to each other, rather than the upper sitting on top of the lower. This has the effect for the upper set of shelves to poorly secured. I put 40 pounds bags on the upper 2 shelves (much lower then the 250 pound rating), and wiggled the shelf, and the upper part became even less secured. Customer support had no solution for my issue in this size rack.

In the 3 shelf units I bought, I had 4 long shelf supports that were too short. Customer support provided replacements, however it did take multiple tries to get the correct ones.

I asked to speak to a manager to share my concerns about diluting the reputation of gorilla rack with this type of product, but never got the promised callback.

I have three larger Gorilla shelves that went together quickly and look great. I bought this smaller unit for a corner in my garage. Several problems occured while assembling the unit. (1) When pounding the pins into place, the metal bent with a rubber mallet; this didn't happen with the larger units. Luckily, the metal could be bent back into shape. (2) One of the eyelets where the pins are secured was too wide and would not hold the pin. (3) While assembling the last shelf support, the metal buckled, so that side will go against the wall. I didn't give the unit 1 star because it will function, but its not worth the money. There must be better alternatives for shelving.

New info: The reason it buckled is because the shelf is too short on one side! ZERO STARS.

This is NOT a Gorilla shelf. We purchased several true Gorilla shelves approximately 12 years ago and they were WONDERFUL and cost the same as the one I just bought from Amazon. The old ones were VERY thick, heavy duty STEEL. I don't know what these are made of but it is NOT HEAVY DUTY. It's GARBAGE. Anyone giving this product a good review obviously works for the company. Gorilla shelves should now be called flimsy, thin, unstable, worthless, made in China, metal garbage. Save your money or try to buy an old used one.

Shelves were garbage. The easy snap together frame and shelves were anything but. Nothing lined up and the material it was made of was on the lowest quality. I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT TO ANYONE.

Don't buy this item! It's not even a question of getting what you paid for. Extremely poor quality of materials. The metal used for the posts and shelf supports is thin and can be bent with fingers. The shelves are weak and probably couldn't hold much weight. Also, holes don't line up and shelves can't be attached to the posts. Not worth the money and when I went to return it, the vendor didn't even want it returned to them and told me to get rid of it and that I would be issued a credit refund. I guess they realize themselves that the item is a piece of junk.

It arrived before the date they said, and was well packaged.

When I ordered the cart I got what I expected.

It was not exotic but just an ordinary everyday microwave cart.

We could have ordered a more expensive all wood cart, but this is the one my wife wanted.

Assembly was not that easy but if you take your time and do a bit at a time it goes together.

Hint: The last thing to do is put on the back panel. It's important to make sure the cart is square.

Sit the cart on it's top: That makes it easier to align it properly.

Does the job. Has a tendency to roll when opening the doorswould be better if it had locks. Good product for the money. Took a while to put together.
